mandela's home in johannesburg. the former south african president died at the age of 95. since then hundreds gathered to pay tribute to his life and littlecy. cbs reporter susan mcginnis with how the entire world is reacting to mandela's death. >> reporter: south africans sang and danced out sight nelson mandela's home in johannesburg. reporter: the outpouring began in the middle of the night when word spread that the man they called madiba which means father died. >> i was sad. but i'm also happy he gets to rest in peace. >> reporter: mandela spent 27 years in prison because he fought against apartheid. south africa's system of legalized racism. but as desmond tutu noted this morning he forgave those who imprisoned him. >> this one has become a global icon symbol of reconciliation. >> reporter: upon his relief

mandela would go on to become south africa's first black president in 1994. years later, he would meet the man that would become america's first black president. >> we've lost one of the most influential courageous good human beings that any of us will share time with on this earth. no longer belongs to us. he belongs to the ages. >> reporter: not far from the white house, mourners gathered at mandela's statue outside south africa's embassy. >> intellectually i think we try to prepare ourselves but emotionally it's not that easy. >> reporter: flags at the white house and other federal buildings will fly at half- staff in honor of mandela through monday. susan mcginnis, cbs news, washington. four months after he was released from prison, nelson mandela visited the united states and more than 70,000 people packed the oakland coliseum to see him back in june of 1990. kpix 5's anne makovec in the newsroom with memories of his bay area connections. reporter: the east bay

mountaintops. traveling around the state 50s into the central valley watch out for the rain in far northern california. and then looks like those showers beginning to develop into the afternoon hours so those clouds start to roll in and i think for the evening commute maybe scattered showers nothing too heavy then likely to pick up a bit overnight tonight and into tomorrow morning. with that in mind, all that cold air already trapped in place so winter weather advisory is going up over the east bay hills and also the santa cruz mountains. could see 2 to 4 inches of snow overnight tonight and into tomorrow morning. headed to the high country not a bad idea. grab the chains and take them up there. they are talking about heavy snowfall up to 2 feet across some of the higher peaks. temperatures for us will be on the chilly side again. only 40s and some 50s outside. and then as we look over the in ex-couple of days -- next couple of days, cold saturday night and sunday. another hard freeze and toward monday and tuesday temperatures start to warm up and maybe more showers but not as cold as we

mandela. the former south african president died yesterday just moments ago south african president jacob zuma announced a state burial for mandela on december 15. taking a live look now at a memorial outside his home in johannesburg, you can see many people gathering there. they are leaving flowers, praying, and dancing all in celebration of his life. andrew spencer on the overwhelming show of affection for him. >> reporter: in bold letters outside the apollo theater in memory of nelson mandela, he change our world. >> god must have spent a whole lot of time in making nelson mandela. >> reporter: at a chanukah event at the white house, president barack obama took another moment to acknowledge what the world lost. >> a moral giant who embodied the dignity and the courage and the hope and sought to bring about justice not only in south africa but i think to inspire millions around the world.

parents' home in 1993. but they didn't report her missing until 2007 because she was a runaway a number of times. >> you know how some teenagers have difficult times and kori was one of those teenagers who just didn't adjust or fit in real well. >> the murder is still unsolved. police have identified two persons of interest. but they are asking for the public's help in bringing a killer to justice. some other headlines around the bay area on this friday now. cold weather may have been responsible for this water main break overnight in martinez. it happened last night around 10:30. the main thoroughfare that goes through martinez. the water is shut down but it did create quite a mess with water going into a number of yards and garages. police in hercules are looking for a possible serial burglar. at least 8 burglaries have been record over a three-week period. most of them happened in an area called the birds. in every instant, a door was pried open. the proximity of the break-ins has led police to believe they

may all be connected. new this morning, an investigation is begun into the construction of a barge by google on san francisco bay. the bay conservation and development economics will determine whether google and the owners of a pier on treasure island have the necessary permits. google says it is already making changes requested by the coast guard. google reportedly plans to open a floating retail store. wall street will be reacting this morning to the new employment numbers out of washington. the november jobs report is just in. alexis christoforous of cbsmoneywatch.com joins us now. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we could be in for a very strong open here on wall street because the economy added a better-than-expected 203,000 jobs last month. wall street was expecting 180,000. the unemployment rate fell to 7% from 7.3%. that is better than expected. and that report may convince the fed to finally scale back

its stimulus program. not necessarily something wall street wants to see happen. nevertheless, stock futures are reacting. they are pointing to a higher open. yesterday the dow fell for the fifth straight day down 68 points and the nasdaq slipped 4. los angeles is suing wells fargo and citigroup for mortgage discrimination. l.a.'s attorney general claims the bank's practices led to a wave of foreclosures in black and hispanic neighborhoods driving down property values and costing the city hundreds of millions in tax dollars. it's also more expensive to finance a home this week. according to freddie mac, the average rate on a 30-year fixed loan jumped to 4.46% from 4.29% last week. the rate on a 15-year loan increased to 3.47%. well, brace yourself because milk prices could double next year to $7 a gallon. that's if congress doesn't reach an agreement on a new farm bill by january 1. and it's not just milk we're talking about. we could see higher prices for other dairy products like

this will drop down in that cold air and bring rain and snow down to about 2500 feet. no delays at sfo. mostly sunny skies early on then cloudy this afternoon. then it looks like across the country we have some rain into houston about 40 degrees. 8 degrees in denver, 21 in chicago, and 49 with some rain in new york. storm system approaching the coastline cloudy later in the day and showers in the evening. so the commute could be wet. then that system sweeps through overnight tonight into early tomorrow morning. our skies begin to clear out. winter weather advisory posted though over the east bay hills and also the santa cruz mountains. could see 2 to 4 inches of snow above about 2500 feet. storm warnings in the sierra nevada maybe as much as 2 feet of snow there. temperatures will be in the 40s and 50s. looks like the next couple of days watch as chilly temperatures show up once again on saturday, slight chance of showers tomorrow morning an warming up into tuesday and
